Lack of Diversity in Film! Don’t Forget about Art!

It is no secret that there is a lack of diversity in the film industry. Stevie Wonder could see the lack of diversity in film. According to a study by University of Southern California less than 1% of all directors across 180 films were Black.  And out of 1,400 speaking characters only 11.6% were black, 1.9 %were hispanic and 7% were Asian. Between 2008 and 2010 there have been slight increases in Black and Asian representation on screen, but a decrease in Hispanic. So Whats the deal Hollywood?  Phil Alden Robinson told a news outlet that the film industry acknowledges their lack of diversity but the limitation in academy membership growth means the landscape is slow to change…. That’s all good and dandy but it also sounds like an excuse. I could be wrong, but saying you can’t include more minorities in your films because someone else has been hogging the same membership seat for 20 years sounds like an excuse. Which brings me to my next point: If the film industry is aware of their shortfalls, what about the art community?

PAUSE: And might I add that Halle Berry, The Gorgeous Denzel Washington, and Hattie McDaniel all received Oscars for playing  stereotypical roles of Blacks…. just saying. Anyway. PLAY: The art community and their lack of diversity is also incredibly obvious. In Austin, there are very few good galleries, there are no GREAT galleries nor are the Museums home run hitters and they all are white, male, old, dead, oriented. Okay… that’s a little harsh, some galleries have a small iota of diversity but that diversity is more so geared toward Hispanic art  and works by certain women (a whole different topic). Don’t worry Dallas is WORSE. You can count on one hand the number of successful Black artists in Dallas that received any recognition and Women… what women?? Houston seems to be the only example of an actual, real live, functioning, buying, selling, art community in Texas. But I digress. I’m curious as to when the arts will become so diverse that there is an equal playing field. In other words, will there ever be a day when we will stop counting how many blacks have won Oscars, how many Black Artists are in the MOMA, how many Black artists/musicians/actors/architects/etc… Is this possible?
